Pilots at Tolworth: Pilots offers a flexible and adaptable programme for children and young people with the core elements of worship, learning and service. It gives a strong identity, linked to a broader organisation in the United Reformed Church. It is hoped that this will help to encourage children from outside Tolworth and build a sense of belonging and commitment for our current children.
At Tolworth we provide the two groups (at the moment), Deckhands (aged 5-6) and Adventurers (aged 7-11).
Pilots has been in existence since 1936 and believes that children and young people matter. Therefore, Pilots gives local churches the chance to share the love of God in the ongoing life of Jesus Christ by inviting children and young people on an exciting journey
Why Pilots
- Enables self-discovery in a fun, secure environment
- Gives an opportunity to respond to God
- Is rooted in the world-wide church
- Helps children and young people to grow in the Christian faith
History
John Williams was a missionary and with his wife Mary went out to the islands in the South Pacific to take the Christian message. They spent many years travelling among the islands speaking about Jesus and helping people, but often encountered great danger. John was eventually murdered. In 1936 the London Missionary Society invited children all over Britain to save their ship halfpennies and contribute to buying a ship in John’s memory so that his work could continue. Several ships were bought in this way and the organisation Pilots came into being.

Playtime is a Mothers, Carers and Toddlers group held every Wednesday morning in the Raeburn Hall from 10am till 11,30am. Admission is 1.00 per child-adults free. We have lots of toys and a craft table each week. We have a cup of tea for adults about 10.30 and a drink & biscuit for the children too then we transfer to the Small hall to sing nursery rhymes before we finish. We welcome all children from birth until they start nursery at about 3 years old.
The group is run by ladies from the congregation during term time only.
It is chance for parents, grandparents and carers to get a coffee, chat and watch those in their charge have a thoroughly good play! We provide tea and coffee, plenty of play activities and equipment, and craft activity for the more focused and a noisy child-centred sing-a-long.

Vinyasa Flow / Rise & Flow (Live classes in Surbiton & Tolworth) – Vinyasa Yoga is a dynamic style of yoga practice that links movement to breath through a flowing sequence of poses, leaving you feeling refreshed, nourished and relaxed. Vinyasa literally translates as ‘Consciousness in motion’ with ‘Vin’ meaning ‘To place’ and ‘Yasa’ meaning ‘In a special way.’ Set to a flowing music playlist; these classes are designed to help you strengthen, lengthen and balance your body whilst calming and settling your mind.
Restorative Yoga (Online) – Restorative yoga is a restful floor-based practice, where we use props and blankets to support the body in longer holds. Classes include just 5 or 6 postures designed to gently stretch and open the body whilst allowing the muscles to deeply relax. These classes help to support you in finding a deeply restorative state to help you rest and repair and bring you out of a ‘fight or flight’ mode and into your resting parasympathetic nervous system. Perfect if you are looking for something a little more soothing.
Private | one-to-one – One-to-one classes are a great way to deepen your practice and explore your body/mind within a held and nurturing space. Whether you are looking to understand your own movement habits, or would simply like to refine and improve your technique; a one-to-one class can be a great place to start. I am currently offering 60 or 90 -minute one-to-one sessions where we will move through a specifically tailored Asana sequence designed to meet your personal inquiries and investigations. These sessions can be held in person in rented space; or delivered via Zoom.
